Hosford Review

Movie Review: 10,000 B.C. – What are the critics talking about? I enjoyed this movie. If you like movies without much thought behind it and just for the pure entertainment of it all, good movie. They even spoke English back then, can you imagine? Bit of a hoakie ending but what the heck. Give it a B+ and a recommendation to see.

Recipes: Hit the Mother-Lode this time. How about fresh Corn Salsa, huh? You gotta love this stuff… This is going to take up some space.
Salsa:
Large ears of sweet corn (6 make abt 4 cups
Red Bell Pepper (1 should do it)
Cup of Tomatoes (Cherry or something vine ripe)
1 bunch of Green Onions (remove tops and bottoms)
2 Jalapeno Peppers
1 Ripe Avocado
Dressing:
1/3 Cup Corn Oil ( I prefer light olive oil)
2 Large Limes (use just the juice)
Little water (2Tbs should work)
1 tsp Chili Powder
2 Tbs fresh Cilantro (I get crazy here – 2 Tbs don’t cut it for me… but at least this much is needed)
2 Cloves Fresh Garlic (1 tsp of the bottled stuff works)
½ tsp Ground Cumin
¼ tsp Mexican Oregano
¼ tsp Ground Black Pepper
¼ tsp Chipotle Pepper Powder
2 tsp Sugar
1 tsp Salt

Mix all spices w/the oil and let stand for at least 5 minutes. Beat in (whisk or beater) lime juice, sugar and salt. Let all that sit out at room temperature until ready for the salad. Boil corn about 10 minutes, rinse with cold water. Roast the red pepper (while cooking corn) until starts to blacken. Wrap in plastic wrap about 15 minutes (it’s self-steaming). Or get the all-ready roasted peppers. While waiting for the pepper, cut the kernels of corn from the cob and place in large bowl. Unwrap pepper, rinse, peel, remove core, and mince into little bits, add to bowl. Dice up tomatoes and onions, add to bowl. Core and seed jalapenos, mince finely, add to bowl. Pour the dressing over the salad, mix together gently. Peel avocado, add by mixing in gently as well. Place in a tightly sealed container, put in the fridge at least a few hours (overnight is good). Serve with corn chips. (Wash down with a cold Corona…) You’re going to like this one. Trust me J

Here’s some Hosford memories. Think you can answer these? (Answers...)

1968 - Eighth Grade Hosford

Who sang Strangers in the Night in an All-School Assembly? Cindy D'Amico
Wow!!! Way to go Edna. She got it right.

Who were the two sets of twins in eighth grade? Brenda and Benson Fong, Jo and Ed Kneeland

Who in eighth grade had the same last name, were related, but were not siblings and not twins? Bill and Kay Ferrier

Which teacher had his chair covered in chalk dust, didn’t know it, and sat down without a clue? Who was the guilty student?
(1) Mr. Snively got chalked.
(2) Steve Skorney thinks he’s the guilty party. As I recall, it was in math class. Ole Snively went to the Teacher’s Lounge for a smoke. I (Chris) locked the door, pulled the door shade down, drew a few pictures on the board and pulled the world map down to hide them. Steve beat the erasers on his chair? And what name did Mr. Snively shout out when he came back and couldn’t get in? Mine of course. I have no idea why I was always the guilty party.

1967 – Seventh Grade Mrs. Flatt’s Class

Who got a wad of gum stuck in their hair? And who put it there? Clay Zimmerman / Bart Stephens did it. (Come on Bart, admit it… we’re over 50 now)

We had to sit alphabetically by last name in Mrs. Flatt’s class that year. Based on that fact, who’s chair was pulled out from underneath them? Rosemary… and who got stuck writing on the board after school how hazard it was to do such a thing? Some guy named Pack… Sorry Rosemary, never happen again. Trust me.

The Greatest Game. You’re at Langdon Farms Golf Course on the last day in February, and you’re standing in the Tee Box at the Seventh Hole. It’s a 155 yards to the green, slight breeze but nothing really to worry about. You ponder the moment, what club to use… will a 7-iron get me there, better go with the 6-iron. You set the ball on the tee and step back for a couple practice swings. Then look from behind the ball down the fairway, convince yourself you’ve chosen the right club. Step up to the ball, center yourself, wriggle the toosh just a bit, one last look down the fairway, concentrate… slow on the backswing and power forward through the ball, keeping the head down, and BAM!!!! It felt like a great hit, ball’s going straight, and… Oh My God! It lands on the green, looks to be rolling towards the hole, and…. IT’S IN THE HOLE!!! IT’S A HOLE–IN-ONE!!! Can you believe it? Well, believe it. Our own Dave Bearson drops a hole-in-one on February 29th at the Langdon Golf Course. Congratulations Dave !!!!
